How to Choose a Psychometric Test Provider in India
The market for online assessments in India is crowded, and the claims on vendor websites are hard to compare. This guide gives a practical checklist to evaluate any provider, including us, and the red flags that should make you ask more questions.
Start with the use case, not the catalogue
Write down the decision the assessment will inform (screening 2,000 graduates, choosing between three internal candidates, developing first-time managers) and who will use the result. Different decisions need different tools, different evidence and different levels of rigour.
Evidence: what to ask for
A credible provider can answer these for each test you plan to use.
- A technical manual or equivalent that describes how the test was built and scored.
- Reliability: how consistent are the scores? (Internal consistency and test-retest figures, with sample sizes.)
- Validity: what evidence shows the scores relate to something that matters, and for which kinds of job and group?
- Norms: who is the reference group, how large is it, when and how was it collected, and is it relevant to your candidates?
- Fairness: has the provider checked for group differences, and what accommodations exist?
Red flags
These patterns should slow a purchase.
- Validity numbers borrowed from research on a whole category of tests and presented as evidence for the vendor's own test.
- Claims such as 'scientifically proven', '100% accurate' or 'predicts success' without data.
- Large norm sample numbers with no description of who was sampled.
- No way to see a sample report or take a sample test.
- Unclear answers about data storage, retention or sub-processors.
Practicalities that decide whether it works
Check the candidate experience on a mobile phone, the languages offered, how reports read to a line manager who is not a psychologist, and how results reach your systems. Ask about integration options: AXIS360 offers an API and signed webhooks for connecting an applicant tracking system, and does not claim native connectors for specific ATS products.
Pricing models
Providers commonly charge per test or per candidate, by subscription, or in credit packs. Compare the total cost for your expected volume, including reports, retests and any minimum commitments. AXIS360 lists prices per candidate and per report, and uses credits at a fixed rupee value; see the pricing page.
Run a small pilot
Before a large rollout, run the assessment on a small group of current employees or recent hires, look at whether the reports are useful to the people who will use them, and check the candidate feedback. Ask us the same questions as any other vendor: we will tell you what evidence exists for each instrument and what is still to be published.
Frequently asked questions
Should I choose an assessment provider based on price?
Price matters but total cost of use matters more: choose the tool that fits the decision, has appropriate evidence and is easy for candidates and managers to use, then compare cost for your volume.
Do we need a technical manual?
For selection decisions, yes: it is how you judge whether a test is reliable and relevant. For development uses a lighter level of evidence may be acceptable, but ask what exists.
Can one assessment cover every role?
Rarely. Use a small set of tools matched to role families: a screener for volume, an aptitude test for analytical roles, a judgement test for service roles.
